THE FOLDING MATH

FOLDING MATH – when Geometry “appears” in every fold.

Friday, July 19, 2024, MAPP brought a brand-new idea to children in Bà Rịa- Vũng Tàu: learning Math through… paper folding. Inspired by Japanese origami, we designed a hands-on session where each fold not only creates a cute figure but also “reveals” very real geometric concepts: symmetry, angles, ratios, perimeter–area, and even step-by-step reasoning.

We started with a simple paper-fish model, just enough of a “hook” to talk about lines of symmetry and ratios. Then the models ramped up in difficulty: the paper crane (sequential folding – stepwise reasoning), a paper box (right angles – parallel lines – volume), and a small challenge: “How can we fold an equilateral triangle using only creases?”

The vibe was very “learn-and-wow” at the same time: some groups counted folds to spot repeating patterns; some students discovered that “fold in half – open” is exactly how to construct a perpendicular bisector… What I loved most were the try-fix-get. it moments: a 2 mm misfold made a box not fit, and the whole group naturally went back to check angles and edges pure “mathematical thinking,” but very organic.

We wanted to turn Math into a touchable experience: the kids made the products with their own hands, then drew out the concepts from there. After the session, each student took home a colorful craft and a bundle of “geometry tips” hidden in the folds.

“Folding Math” was MAPP’s kickoff event, and we’re deeply grateful for everyone’s support and trust. That energy gives us the courage to prepare more activities and keep telling Math stories in a way that you can touch – see – understand. See you at the next sessions, where Math no longer sits quietly in notebooks.
